New U.S. Ambassador Reaffirms from Washington: The Moroccanness of the Sahara Is a Strategic Pillar, and the Kingdom’s Sovereignty Is the Basis of Any Solution

During his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate for his appointment as the next Ambassador of the United States to the Kingdom of Morocco, Richard Buchan III clearly and firmly emphasized the consistent position of Washington regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue. He affirmed that Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces enjoys explicit and renewed American support.
Buchan recalled that following the recognition of Moroccan sovereignty by former President Donald Trump, the United States views the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the only serious and credible path to resolving this longstanding regional conflict. He stated that, should he take up his diplomatic post in Rabat, he would actively work to facilitate this process and advance this direction in concrete terms.
The designated diplomat also underlined the depth of bilateral relations between Rabat and Washington, describing Morocco as a strategic ally of the United States in North Africa. He added that strengthening this partnership will be one of his priorities, not only in the fields of security and defense, but also in economy, investment, and the transfer of advanced technologies.
This American position, expressed amid a delicate regional context, reaffirms strong and unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the definitive solution to the Sahara issue. It also confirms that Morocco remains a pillar of stability and regional cooperation within its geographical surroundings, as well as a reliable partner for Washington on strategic matters.
