Morocco is preparing to launch an unprecedented and ambitious electricity interconnection project with France, expected to mark a major shift in the landscape of Euro-Mediterranean energy cooperation.
During her visit to the French capital, Paris, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, held important talks with her French counterpart. The discussions addressed the progress of this vital project, which involves laying a uniquely deep underwater power cable.
This project is anticipated to become a new strategic pillar that will further cement Morocco’s role as a key energy link between the African continent and Europe. The new interconnection will add to the energy network that already links Morocco to Spain and is expected to soon extend to both Portugal and France.
This initiative goes beyond mere electricity exchange. It is intended to supply clean and sustainable energy generated by Morocco through its ambitious renewable energy projects—energy that will be exported to Europe, thereby enhancing energy security on the northern shore of the Mediterranean.
In this context, Moroccan-French cooperation stands as a model of win-win partnership, based on mutual interests and the strengthening of geostrategic energy ties between the Global South and North. It embodies a forward-looking vision that positions the Mediterranean as a space for energy integration and shared development.
