UK MPs and Lords Urge Government to Officially Recognize Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara

More than thirty members of the British Parliament—both from the House of Commons and the House of Lords—have called on the UK government to formally recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, emphasizing that the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat represents “the only realistic solution” to end the long-standing dispute.
In a letter addressed to the British Foreign Secretary, the parliamentarians stressed that the UK’s support for Morocco’s initiative aligns with the positions of its key allies, such as the United States, France, and Spain, all of whom view the Moroccan plan as a practical basis for achieving regional stability.
The signatories warned that the continuation of the current status quo poses a threat to regional security, especially amid rising tensions in the Middle East and the growing terrorist threats across the Sahel region. They underlined Morocco’s role as a trusted strategic partner and a key player in promoting regional security and countering extremism.
The MPs also highlighted the vast economic potential of the Sahara region, citing major infrastructure projects like the Dakhla Port, which reflect sustainable development and open new avenues for international cooperation.
They further emphasized that UK support for the Moroccan initiative is fully compatible with international obligations and strengthens the country’s contribution to peace and stability in the region. The parliamentarians urged the government to take a clear stance in support of Morocco’s efforts to reach a lasting resolution to the conflict.
This call comes at a time when international support for Morocco’s autonomy plan is growing, placing additional pressure on the British government to adopt a decisive position that backs peace efforts in the region.
