Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita arrived in the Spanish capital, Madrid, on Thursday morning for an official visit that forms part of a European diplomatic tour aimed at strengthening the growing international momentum behind Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a solution to the fabricated conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
During his meeting with his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, Spain reaffirmed its support for the Moroccan proposal, describing it as “the most serious, realistic, and credible basis” for reaching a lasting solution to this regional dispute.
The joint statement issued by both ministers highlighted the continued close coordination between Rabat and Madrid and underscored the depth of the strategic partnership uniting the two countries—particularly in light of the significant understandings established during the new phase of their bilateral relations.
This Spanish position, which comes amid growing European support for the Moroccan initiative, reflects a qualitative shift in regional and international engagement with the Sahara issue and confirms the increasingly recognized status of the autonomy initiative as a rational solution enjoying broad support.
