In a live interview from New York on Medi1 TV, Omar Hilale, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated that the UN Security Council’s meeting on the Moroccan Sahara issue held tonight did not bring any major surprises. According to him, it was a routine consultation session in which UN envoys presented the latest developments. However, the most significant aspect, Hilale emphasized, lies in the current international political context—especially after recent developments in Washington that have strengthened Morocco’s position.

Indeed, the United States has once again reaffirmed, clearly and unequivocally, its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, declaring that the Moroccan autonomy initiative remains the only realistic and viable framework for resolving this long-standing regional conflict. Hilale stressed that this American stance carries strategic significance, particularly with Washington’s renewed commitment to supporting and advancing the political process under the United Nations’ auspices.

The Moroccan diplomat also pointed out that over 110 countries worldwide now support Morocco’s autonomy proposal, reflecting growing international backing for the Kingdom’s position. He described this as a gradual but steady shift toward full recognition of the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, particularly in light of Algeria’s continued refusal to participate in round-table talks and its insistence on outdated rhetoric rooted in the Cold War era.

Responding to increasing questions from American and international circles about the “representation” claimed by the “Polisario,” Hilale asserted that the group has no democratic legitimacy or genuine representativeness of the Sahrawi population. He explained that the so-called “leaders” of this entity were never elected by the people, forming instead a small oligarchy backed by Algeria, unlike the elected and legitimate representatives of the Sahrawi population living in Morocco’s southern provinces.

Hilale also addressed a recent report by The Washington Post, which revealed “dangerous” links between the Polisario and Iran through Hezbollah—further confirming Morocco’s long-standing warnings about Iranian infiltration that threatens regional security and stability.

Furthermore, the ambassador highlighted the strong partnership between Morocco and the United States, particularly in the fight against terrorism. He emphasized that Morocco’s counterterrorism experience, launched after the Casablanca attacks, has become a regional and global model, making the Kingdom a trusted partner for Washington and other major powers committed to global security.

Hilale concluded by reaffirming that Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, remains committed to achieving a permanent solution to this artificial conflict within the framework of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He expressed hope that the 50th anniversary of the Green March will be the historic moment to finally resolve this issue once and for all.
