During his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed the United States’ steadfast position in supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, noting that Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal is the only viable framework for resolving the dispute in a just and lasting manner.
In the meeting, which took place on April 8, 2025, Rubio emphasized the United States’ full support for Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal, considering it the only solution that ensures stability and is a realistic and serious step toward resolving the conflict. He clarified that the United States would continue to facilitate progress toward reaching an acceptable solution for all parties involved.
The U.S. Secretary of State also stressed the importance of encouraging the concerned parties to engage in negotiations without delay, using Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal as the basis for these talks. Rubio added that the U.S. administration under President Donald Trump had repeatedly reaffirmed its full support for Morocco’s position and viewed granting genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the only possible solution.
The meeting between Rubio and Bourita also saw both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation between the United States and Morocco in various areas, including enhancing security and peace in the region, as well as expanding commercial cooperation for the benefit of both peoples.
