On Monday, the U.S. Congress approved the victory of the elected president, Donald Trump, in the presidential elections, making him the 47th president of the United States. This came after members counted and confirmed the results of the Electoral College vote, allowing Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, to prepare for the inauguration ceremony on January 20th.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who had competed against Trump in the November 2024 elections, announced the voting results during the congressional session. She stated that “Donald J. Trump of Florida received 312 votes, while Kamala D. Harris of California received 226 votes.”
Despite the severe weather conditions that hit Washington, D.C., where the city was struck by a major snowstorm, efforts to finalize the certification process continued on schedule, confirming Trump’s and his vice president’s eligibility to take the oath of office at the planned ceremony on January 20th. It was also noted that the anniversary of the January 2021 assault on the legislative seat by Trump’s supporters was fresh in people’s minds, reflecting the challenges faced by the U.S. political system during the past period.
The countdown to Trump’s inauguration begins on January 20th, marking the start of his second presidential term, amidst new hopes and challenges, while the inauguration ceremony will take place at the same location where the 2021 riots occurred.
