In a new diplomatic stance that reflects clarity of vision and consistency in direction, the European Union has reiterated its unwavering position of not recognizing the so-called “Sahrawi Republic” proclaimed by the Polisario Front, affirming that this position is shared by all member states without exception.
This reaffirmation came from the official spokesperson for the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy during a press conference held on Friday in the Belgian capital, Brussels, in response to a question regarding the upcoming ministerial meeting between the European Union and the African Union scheduled for next week.
The spokesperson explained that this bilateral meeting is jointly organized by both the European and African Unions, adding that the matter of sending invitations to participants from the African side falls solely within the jurisdiction of the African Union. In this context, he emphasized that the European Union has not extended any direct invitation to the separatist entity known as the “Sahrawi Republic,” thereby refuting any interpretation suggesting a change in the EU’s position.
The EU official stressed that the European Union has always maintained a clear and unambiguous position, namely its non-recognition of the so-called “Sahrawi Republic,” noting that any possible presence of this entity in joint meetings cannot be construed as a change or softening of this firm stance.
These statements come within a regional and international context marked by growing support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a serious and realistic solution to the fabricated conflict over the Sahara—an approach echoed in the positions of many countries and international organizations, including the European Union, which continues to affirm its respect for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
