The General Staff of the Southern Zone is currently hosting the main planning meeting for the 20th African Lion exercise. The event, taking place in Agadir from January 29 to February 2, is jointly organized by Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and the United States Armed Forces.

Representatives from the FAR, along with counterparts from the United States and approximately ten partner countries, are actively participating in the strategic planning discussions. The exercise, renowned as the most significant multinational event on the African continent, aims to enhance operational, technical, and procedural interoperability between participating nations’ armed forces.

The planning meeting will define the intricacies of the various activities scheduled for the 2024 African Lion. According to the statement released by the General Staff, these activities include comprehensive training in operational domains, a strategic planning exercise for staff officers, joint interarm and interarmy maneuvers, civil-military actions, and exercises focusing on nuclear, radiological, biological, and chemical (NBC) decontamination.

The exercise is slated to take place from May 20 to 31, 2024, across several regions, including Agadir, Tantan, Mehbes, Tata, Kenitra, Benguerir, and Tifnit. Beyond fostering cooperation and interoperability, African Lion 2024 is designed to provide valuable training in the planning and execution of complex military operations.

This year’s edition is particularly significant as it marks the 20th anniversary of the African Lion exercise. The event, a testament to the enduring relationship between the Royal Armed Forces and their American counterparts, has been instrumental in promoting peace and security in the region.

In a concluding remark, the statement emphasized that the anniversary celebration underscores the strength and longevity of the bond between the participating armed forces, highlighting the commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
