Jamaica Hails UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and Considers Autonomy under Moroccan Sovereignty One of the Most Feasible Solutions

Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, on Wednesday in New York, hailed the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2797, which expresses “full support for the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate and conduct negotiations on the basis of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, while stressing that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be one of the most feasible solutions.”

This position was expressed in a joint communiqué signed by Ms. Johnson Smith and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, following talks between the two officials on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The communiqué welcomed “the diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Morocco to achieve international consensus and create momentum in support of the Autonomy Plan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.”

During their talks, Mr. Bourita and Ms. Johnson Smith agreed to continue political consultations between the Kingdom of Morocco and Jamaica and to coordinate their positions on issues of common interest.
