U.S. Bill Classifies the Polisario as a Foreign Terrorist Organization with Bipartisan Support

U.S. Representatives Joe Wilson (Republican) and Jimmy Panetta (Democrat) have jointly introduced a bill titled the Polisario Front Terrorist Designation Act, calling on the U.S. administration to designate the Polisario Front as a foreign terrorist organization.

This bipartisan initiative represents a significant political blow to the separatist entity, especially amid growing accusations linking it to actors hostile to regional stability—most notably Iran and its military proxy Hezbollah, as well as declared support from Russia in international forums.

In an official statement, Congressman Joe Wilson described the Polisario Front as a Marxist militia that receives direct support from Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia. He emphasized that it serves as a tool to undermine the security and stability of the Kingdom of Morocco—a historic ally of the United States for 248 years and a strategically vital partner in North Africa.

The bill comes in the context of an escalating global crackdown on groups that use violence, armed struggle, and separatism as means to impose facts on the ground. Meanwhile, Morocco continues to strengthen its diplomatic and defense posture with the backing of international partners, foremost among them the United States.

This legislative proposal must now go through the approval process in both chambers of Congress before being referred to the U.S. administration for formal enactment. If passed, it would legally restrict the Polisario’s movements, dry up its funding sources, and prohibit international engagement with it.

The initiative sends a clear political message: the United States will not tolerate entities that threaten the security of its allies or attempt to forge alliances with its adversaries on African soil—especially as the region undergoes rapid geopolitical shifts.

It is worth noting that the pressure on the Polisario has intensified in recent months following international intelligence reports revealing suspicious activities and coordination with groups already listed as terrorist organizations. This further bolsters Morocco’s efforts to expose the true nature of the armed separatist movement in the Moroccan Sahara.
