Panama Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative and Praises the Kingdom’s Role under King Mohammed VI’s Leadership

ALDAR/
In a new affirmation of the growing international support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue, Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez, expressed his country’s firm and consistent support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, describing it as a realistic and credible solution to the artificial regional dispute over the Sahara.
This statement came during a joint press conference held with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, following their talks in the capital, Rabat. Martínez-Acha reiterated Panama’s clear stance, considering Morocco’s autonomy proposal as “the most serious, credible, and realistic basis” for reaching a lasting solution to the conflict, stressing that his country views the initiative as “the only viable solution for the future.”
The Panamanian official added that his country is closely following the advanced role played by the Kingdom of Morocco, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, at both the regional and international levels, particularly in terms of South-South cooperation and the promotion of stability and development across the African continent.
He also expressed deep appreciation for Morocco’s efforts in fostering development and strengthening peace and stability in Africa, commending what he described as the Kingdom’s “pioneering role” in a number of strategic regional and international issues.
These statements by Panama add another voice to the growing list of countries that have explicitly adopted a position in support of Morocco’s autonomy initiative under its sovereignty, viewing it as the practical framework to end a decades-long dispute that continues to hinder development and stability in the Maghreb and Sahel regions.
It is worth recalling that Morocco submitted its autonomy proposal in 2007, aiming to enable the population of the southern provinces to manage their own affairs within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty. Since then, the initiative has received broad international backing, with several global powers considering it a flexible and comprehensive political framework for resolution.
This rising diplomatic momentum reflects the success of Morocco’s approach, based on realism and compromise, reinforcing the Kingdom’s presence as a key player in regional and global priority issues.
