Irish Parliamentary Praise Signals Shift in Dublin’s Position on the Sahara Issue

In a notable statement with clear political implications, Irish Senator Gerard Craughwell expressed strong solidarity with Morocco, asserting that the Polisario Front must not be allowed to repeat the kind of destruction seen in Gaza at the hands of Hamas and Hezbollah. His remarks followed a tweet by British MP Liam Fox, who described the Polisario as an Iranian proxy similar to those groups.

These statements from prominent Western officials suggest a significant shift in how some European countries are approaching the Moroccan Sahara issue. Positions that were once neutral or ambiguous now appear to be leaning more clearly toward support for Morocco’s stance.

This change did not happen by chance—it reflects the success of Moroccan diplomacy, which has been increasingly effective on the international stage, garnering greater sympathy and backing for the kingdom’s territorial integrity.
