French Intelligence Recommends Revoking Citizenship from French-Algerian Influencers and Investigates Financial Support for Anti-France and Anti-Morocco Campaigns

The French Ministry of the Interior’s Regional Intelligence Directorate has issued an official memo highlighting the need for strict measures against French-Algerian influencers spreading incitement on social media platforms, particularly TikTok.

The memo, published on February 17, 2025, gained significant attention after its details were leaked by the Le Parisien newspaper, which spotlighted intelligence reports indicating an increasing threat posed by these influencers.

This group of influencers has become a point of contention recently, being accused of leading provocative campaigns against France, particularly concerning political statements about the Western Sahara conflict.

Reports suggest that many followers of these digital accounts believe France has sided with Morocco in this dispute, contributing to escalating political and social tensions within the Algerian community in France.

In this context, the intelligence directorate believes that current legal provisions are no longer sufficient to address this issue, especially given the complex methods these influencers employ, which exploit legal loopholes, making criminal accountability difficult.

In an effort to combat this phenomenon, the memo proposed several solutions to counter these threats, with a focus on financial aspects.

One of the key recommendations was to investigate the financial dealings of these influencers, targeting them through tax or financial investigations to disrupt their income sources. According to a French officer who spoke to Le Parisien, economic investigations would reveal more about the financial backers of these accounts and help determine whether these campaigns are individual actions or funded by external political entities.

Interestingly, the memo suggests that among the proposed solutions is taking more severe measures against influencers holding dual citizenship (French and Algerian), including the possibility of revoking their French citizenship in certain cases. This step aims to reduce their ability to influence French society through social media, which has become a new arena for incitement that threatens social cohesion.
