In a phone call with the Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and Commander of the Southern Zone, General Mohamed Berrid, General Charles Q. Brown, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, emphasized the strategic importance of the alliance between the United States and Morocco, confirming that Morocco is one of the United States’ oldest allies. General Brown expressed his country’s strong commitment to continuing its support for Morocco and the strategic partnership between the two sides in addressing the growing security challenges in the Sahel and Maghreb regions.
The conversation covered Morocco’s leading role in the region, particularly through hosting and organizing the “African Lion” maneuvers, which are among the most significant joint military exercises between U.S. and Moroccan forces. These maneuvers underscore the strength of cooperation between the two nations’ armed forces and contribute to enhancing security capabilities to address regional threats.
General Brown also expressed his gratitude to General Mohamed Berrid for Morocco’s distinguished leadership in supporting other African nations, as well as its active participation in numerous peacekeeping operations under the United Nations’ umbrella. Both sides emphasized the need to strengthen joint security cooperation to ensure stability in the Sahel and Maghreb regions, which face complex security challenges including terrorism and threats linked to armed groups.
Morocco, considered one of the United States’ key strategic allies in North Africa, plays a central role in securing stability on the African continent. Through its participation in peacekeeping missions and its effective contribution in combating violent extremism, Morocco remains a reliable partner in enhancing regional and international security.
This strategic cooperation between the Moroccan and U.S. militaries is a successful model of international military alliances, underscoring the necessity for continued collaboration between major powers and African countries to confront the complex security challenges threatening the region and the world.
