The Polisario Threats Against Mauritania Highlight the Urgent Need for International Classification as a Terrorist Organization

ALDAR/

The Polisario Front has issued threats against Mauritania due to its decision to open a new commercial crossing with Morocco.

Bashir Mustafa Sayed, a leader of the Polisario, considered that this move could drag Nouakchott into an armed conflict with the Polisario. While these threats are not new, they raise serious questions about the international community’s stance towards this group, which continues to engage in aggressive tactics.

The Polisario threats clearly indicate the group’s ongoing use of force and intimidation, reflecting behavior marked by violence and continuous threats. What is particularly concerning is that Bashir Mustafa Sayed, who leads these threats, is responsible for numerous grave human rights violations in the Tindouf camps. He has long been accused of being behind repressive practices and crimes against civilians in the areas controlled by the Polisario.

These recent statements highlight the urgent need for stronger positions from the international community, particularly from the United States, which must hasten to classify the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization.

This classification would be an important step towards holding accountable the leaders responsible for ongoing violations and ensuring that these arbitrary practices against innocent civilians do not continue.

Mauritania, for its part, must approach these threats with rationality and caution, continuing to strengthen its trade relations with Morocco without fearing political extortion attempts by the Polisario. The world must also accelerate the necessary measures to halt any form of violence and escalation that could affect the entire region.
