Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State in the Trump Administration: The U.S. Recognition of Morocco’s Sovereignty over Western Sahara is an Irreversible and Unchangeable Decision

ALDAR/

In a new statement reflecting the U.S. position on the issue of Western Sahara, Marco Rubio, the new U.S. Secretary of State, confirmed that his country’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, which took place at the end of the first term of President Donald Trump, is a “decision that is irreversible.” Rubio explained that this stance is not just a fleeting diplomatic position but a long-term strategic commitment.

Rubio said in his remarks: “We recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara at the end of Trump’s term, and this recognition is not subject to reversal. This is the U.S. government’s firm stance, and I will work to reaffirm it in all international forums.”

The U.S. Secretary of State’s statement reaffirms the continuation of the American policy in clear and unwavering support of Morocco, strengthening the Kingdom’s position on the international stage.

In December 2020, the U.S. administration, under President Trump, made a significant diplomatic shift by recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. This recognition marked a pivotal moment in the bilateral relations between the two countries and opened new avenues for cooperation in various fields. The decision was widely welcomed by the Moroccan government and supported by many Arab and African countries, which sought to enhance their relations with the Kingdom following this recognition.

Since the announcement of the U.S. recognition, the region has witnessed significant changes at both the regional and international levels. Some countries followed suit, further strengthening Morocco’s position in the face of challenges posed by other parties involved in the dispute. This move was part of efforts to strengthen Morocco-U.S. relations, particularly in security, economic, and counterterrorism cooperation, as well as in promoting regional stability.

It is expected that the U.S. administration will continue its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara under Marco Rubio’s leadership, further enhancing cooperation in several strategic areas. This stance provides Morocco with an opportunity to expand its alliances and deepen its relations with other major countries, including in fields such as security, trade, and scientific research. This U.S. support could contribute to strengthening Morocco’s position on the international stage.
