Sahara: Brazil’s Support for Autonomy Plan in Line with UNSC Resolutions International Community’s Position
“Brazil’s support to the autonomy proposal, considered by the international community as serious, pragmatic and credible, will be consistent with the UN Security Council resolutions and compatible with the position of the international community” on this issue, said the member of the Lower House (Progressives Party) during the installation of the Morocco-Brazil Friendship Group, of which he is president.
The representative of the State of Paraná (south) stressed that the parliamentary friendship group aims to strengthen cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries, promote cultural and commercial ties, and establish exchanges and visits to enrich the bilateral partnership.
He pointed out that the agreements signed between the two countries, especially in the field of investment promotion, will allow diversifying the areas of cooperation, stressing the crucial importance of Morocco for Brazil, where Moroccan fertilizers contribute to the development of local agriculture.
For him, the strength of relations between the two countries “emanates from the democratic values and principles they share, such as the fight against racism and the rejection of the other”.
In fact, the two countries “share converging positions on issues of global interest, such as sustainable development, the fight against climate change and the promotion of peace and security,” he added, recalling that “Morocco has always supported Brazil to obtain a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.”
The other deputies who spoke at this ceremony hailed the excellence of the cooperative relations between the two countries and their ancestral character, mentioning the numerous opportunities capable of giving further impetus to the Moroccan-Brazilian partnership.
The members of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies also affirmed their commitment to orient parliamentary action towards the consolidation of cooperation between the two countries and the defense of mutual interests.
For his part, the Moroccan ambassador in Brasilia, Nabil Adghoghi, expressed his “satisfaction” with the cooperation at all levels between the two countries, which have a great ambition to raise the level of partnership, an ambition also motivated by a parliamentary contribution within the framework of the friendship group.
“Brazil and Morocco have managed to develop, in recent years, a multifaceted strategic partnership, supported by a comprehensive legal framework,” he added, citing agreements in the fields of investment, defense and judicial cooperation.
The Moroccan diplomat recalled, in this context, that trade exchanges between the two countries registered a historic record last year, highlighting the various existing opportunities in the industrial, logistics, agricultural and tourism sectors, among others.
He assured that Brazil and Morocco continue to expand the areas of their technical cooperation, ranging from E-gov to professional training, through renewable energies, green hydrogen, agronomic research and oceanography.
On the other hand, Adghoghi underlined the efforts of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in defending diversity and interfaith and intercultural dialogue, as well as his contribution in supporting the Palestinian cause, the fight against climate change and the design of effective responses to the migration issue.
On the issue of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, Adghoghi underlined Morocco’s support for the efforts of the UN Secretary General and his Personal Envoy and its commitment to the United Nations to resume the process of round tables involving all parties (Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario), on the basis of resolution 2654 adopted in October 2022. He also highlighted the growing international support for the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco.
This Brazil-Morocco parliamentary friendship group, comprising Brazilian deputies from different political formations, including the Workers’ Party (left, in power), is the second of its kind created at the level of the legislative institution since last October’s elections, after the one created three weeks ago at the level of the Senate.
