Global Governance: Bourita Calls for a Stronger Voice and Concerted Action from the Global South
Speaking at the meeting, held at the initiative of India’s Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Bourita stressed that today’s global challenges call for promoting “fair, renewed and inclusive” multilateralism, capable of better reflecting the aspirations and concerns of all States.
In this context, Bourita advocated stronger dialogue and cooperation among countries of the Global South, noting that South-South cooperation is “no longer an option but an imperative necessity,” whose potential remains underutilized.
The Minister recalled that, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco is promoting a model of South-South cooperation based on solidarity, co-development and win-win partnerships, notably through the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, the Atlantic Initiative aimed at facilitating Sahel States’ access to the Atlantic Ocean, and the Triple A Initiative for the adaptation of African agriculture to climate change.
He identified three priorities to turn South-South cooperation into a genuine strategic lever for development and economic emergence, namely strengthening the influence of countries of the Global South in world governance, boosting South-South partnerships through innovative and mutually beneficial mechanisms, and building a common agenda in strategic sectors, notably artificial intelligence, food security, the digital transition and climate change.
Bourita also urged a far-reaching reform of the international financial architecture and the United Nations, with a view to making them more representative, inclusive and equitable, while strengthening the capacity of world governance to prevent crises and anticipate shocks.
