ALDAR/

Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, took part in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro on April 28, 2025. The session was chaired by Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and focused on current global challenges and the role of BRICS countries in promoting international peace and security.

In his speech, Wang Yi recalled the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, describing it as a historic turning point that gave countries unprecedented opportunities to build peace and achieve shared development, contributing significantly to the advancement of human civilization. However, he warned that the world today is witnessing deep transformations and growing instability that threaten the foundations of global stability, stressing the need for countries to make crucial decisions in the interest of humanity’s future. He emphasized the importance of BRICS countries continuing to play their positive and responsible role in promoting peace and development.

Wang called for a comprehensive approach to security, proposing the implementation of the Global Security Initiative launched by President Xi Jinping, which is based on mutual respect, justice, equity, and cooperation—favoring dialogue over confrontation, and partnerships over rigid alliances.

He also stressed the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts, urging support for United Nations efforts in this regard. China, he affirmed, supports all initiatives aimed at a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis and calls for a fair, sustainable, and acceptable agreement for all parties. Regarding the situation in Palestine, Wang called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe, stressing that the long-term solution lies in implementing the two-state solution to ensure peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel. He reaffirmed China’s willingness to work alongside other BRICS countries to establish lasting stability in the Middle East.

On the development front, the Chinese Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of open cooperation, defending the multilateral trading system, and promoting inclusive and balanced economic globalization. He expressed China’s readiness to deepen partnerships with BRICS countries in key sectors such as poverty reduction, agriculture, education, and health, to better serve the interests of the Global South.

In terms of practical cooperation, Wang Yi called for the activation of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group, enhancing information sharing, exchanging experiences, and strengthening law enforcement capacity. He stressed the importance of implementing the BRICS Food Security Cooperation Strategy, completing the BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Center, and expanding cooperation into new areas such as deep-sea exploration, polar regions, and outer space.

The participating countries welcomed Indonesia’s first-time attendance as a full member of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and expressed their support for China-led global initiatives. They unanimously emphasized the need to strengthen BRICS unity in the face of geopolitical tensions, to commit to diplomatic solutions to crises, and to resist power politics and double standards. They reaffirmed their commitment to building a more just, inclusive, and sustainable international order that protects the legitimate interests of BRICS nations and the broader Global South.
