Morocco's AU PSC Chairmanship in March, Renewed Commitment to Peace & Stability in Africa

Morocco’s chairmanship of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the month of March was an opportunity to reaffirm the Kingdom’s strong commitment to peace and stability in Africa.
In line with the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has consistently advocated for an Africa that believes in its ability to shape its own destiny, Morocco’s chairmanship was marked by the organization of a ministerial meeting on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on peace and security.
During this meeting, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriate, Nasser Bourita, called for the emergence of strong and united African leadership capable of leveraging AI as a true driver of development, peace, and security for the benefit of Africans.
Under Morocco’s chairmanship, the PSC also convened informal consultations with countries undergoing political transitions (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Guinea, Sudan, and Gabon) and addressed the prevailing security situation in Sudan and South Sudan. The initiative to hold these informal consultations was highly appreciated by the six concerned countries, as it not only allowed them to review the progress made in their respective transition processes but also reaffirmed their aspiration for full reintegration into the AU.
During its chairmanship of the PSC, Morocco also remained attentive to developments in several African countries, with a particular focus on the situation in Sudan. Additionally, the PSC addressed the situation in South Sudan twice during the month of March.
The organization of the induction and orientation program for new PSC members was another key highlight of Morocco’s chairmanship of the Council. Held from March 22 to 28, 2025, in Arusha, this induction program helped outline a roadmap to enhance the effectiveness of the AU-PSC.
As Chair of the PSC for the month of March, the Kingdom of Morocco played a pivotal role in the adoption of the Common African Position on the 2025 Review of the United Nations Peacebuilding Architecture. The outcome of Morocco’s chairmanship of the AU-PSC for March 2025 thus reflects the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to a concerted and pragmatic African approach to addressing security challenges on the continent
