Morocco on High Alert to Confront Desert Locust Invasion from Algeria

ALDAR/

Moroccan authorities have gone on high alert after swarms of desert locusts were spotted in the M’Hamid El Ghizlane area, coming from Algerian territory. This type of locust is considered one of the most dangerous agricultural pests globally, as it can completely destroy crops, posing a severe threat to food security.

In response to this situation, the National Center for Locust Control has deployed field teams to the area to monitor the movements of these swarms and detect any signs of a wider spread that could threaten other regions. Additionally, proactive plans have been initiated to protect agricultural crops in the southeastern part of the kingdom, aiming to prevent potential losses.

It is worth noting that the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) classifies the desert locust as one of the most devastating pests for crops due to its rapid reproduction and extraordinary ability to travel long distances in a short time. The desert areas between Algeria and Morocco occasionally experience waves of these locusts, necessitating continuous vigilance and intensive efforts to mitigate their impact.
