Jeune Afrique Reveals the Reasons Behind Morocco’s Diplomatic Supremacy in the Sahel

ALDAR/

A report published by the French newspaper Jeune Afrique highlighted Morocco’s notable achievements in its foreign policy in the Sahel region, emphasizing the fundamental differences between the Moroccan and Algerian approaches to addressing regional and international issues.

The report notes that Morocco adopts a pragmatic and flexible approach in its diplomatic dealings, relying on strong and solid relations with its regional and international partners. This is evident through Rabat’s active engagement in key areas such as security, economic development, and combating extremism in the Sahel.

Morocco has strengthened its position as a key player in supporting regional stability by launching concrete initiatives such as training and capacity-building programs for security forces in Sahel countries, in addition to developmental projects focusing on infrastructure and education.

On the other hand, Algeria follows what is described as a traditional approach, basing its foreign policy on rhetoric without offering sufficient practical solutions. Despite its geographical position and natural resources, Algeria faces challenges in building strong partnerships with Sahel countries, especially as internal crises limit its ability to exert regional influence.

The report also points out that Algeria tends to focus on military solutions, while Morocco employs a more comprehensive approach that integrates human development with security responses, earning it a positive reputation as a stabilizing force.

These developments come amid geopolitical transformations in the Sahel, with increasing emphasis on regional and international cooperation to address challenges such as terrorism and illegal migration. In this context, Morocco stands out as a trusted ally for international partners such as the European Union and the United States, further enhancing its position as an emerging diplomatic power in the region.

The report highlights Morocco’s dynamic foreign policy, built on practical partnerships and fruitful cooperation, which positions the kingdom as a leader in the Sahel. Conversely, Algeria needs to develop its regional vision and reassess its strategies if it seeks to strengthen its role as a key player.

It appears that Morocco is confidently advancing toward bolstering its regional and international presence, leveraging strategies that combine realism and ambition.
