Trump Halts U.S. Aid to South Africa Over Land Ownership Law

ALDAR/

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order halting financial aid provided by the United States to South Africa in response to the country’s new land ownership law.

According to a statement from the White House, the decision was made in reaction to what was described as “atrocious actions” related to the confiscation of farmland owned by ethnic minorities, referring to white farmers affected by the new law.

The move goes beyond just suspending financial aid, as the White House also revealed plans to welcome the affected farmers and their families as refugees in the United States. This step underscores the U.S. administration’s firm stance against South Africa’s land policies.

In his executive order, Trump stated that “the new law, along with previous inflammatory rhetoric and government actions, has contributed to rising violence against certain landowners.” He further argued that “countless government policies aim to undermine equal opportunities in employment, education, and business.”
